Week 2 Theme: Debunking Myths about Asian Americans and Higher Education & Introduction to Social Engineering Theory
Asian American have struggle with the stereotypes of yellow peril and model minority. The usage of the term yellow peril was to push out and isolate asian americans. Fortunately, asian americans were able to stay strong and make their lives in america in their isolated spaces, such as the chinatowns. Then the stereotype shifted to model minority. As Nancy Chung describes, the model minority stereotype is a double edge sword that allowed asian americans to cut forward for more opportunities. However, the stereotype still labels asian americans as a minority and there are barriers that asian american face because of the systematic racism in place where white privilege is invisible and considered acceptable. Asian americans should not be labeled as a model minority because they are more than that stereotype. Asian americans all have their unique stories and background that inspires them to make their future paths a better one for them and their community.
