Week 2

The article “Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender and Generational Differences in Asian American College Access and Choices” discuss the impact of different sources on the college selection process for the Asian American student with different ethnic, gender and generational difference. The research result is different from the general stereotype that many people hold for Asian American students, they may think their parent had a superior influence on the decision-making process of what college they should attend for their children. However, the researcher found out that high school counselor and teacher play very important roles in assisting the first-generation college students to choose their college since their parents haven’t studied in college before and not familiar with the application process. On the other hand, they also find out that male student is less likely influenced by other people in their college selection process and more likely to made a decision on their own. Asian American students place a very high value on college reputation and consider it as their first priority in the college selection process. As many people expected, parent opinion has the most powerful impact on the college selection process for the overall Asian American student populations. However, high school counselors are a little bit higher than parents in terms of the information resources for college selection process. [1] This research paper clearly shows some misconception that the public hold for Asian American students. Although their family place an extremely high value on education, they still have certain degrees of freedom to make decision for their future. According to my observance from the media, I gradually find out Asian parent start to become more democratic and let their children to choose their major and university by themselves. In particular, more and more Chinese parents become very open minded and concern less about their employment opportunities and how much money they are going to made after their graduation, which encourage the student to study the subject that they are interested in. in the future, I believed that the parents influence on Asian children college selection process will continue to decrease and the student has the full autonomy to plan their life path.

Question: Is Asian American treated equally in the admission selection process of the elite university? If not, how do they being treated differently from other student with different racial background?
