Week 2 - Arthur Orola

Arthur Orola
Section AO3

“The Untold History of Modern US Education” provided an incredible glimpse into the origin of our education system. Many would consider education to be the key to living a good life in the future and obtaining a well-paying job in a field that they enjoy and because of that, they hold education in a very important light. On the outside, education is very innocent, seeking to empower individuals with the ability to think logically and critically and instilling the idea into people that they can achieve whatever they want if they work hard and learn as much as they can. However, this reading shed light on the truth of on why the educational system was created – it was created in a way such that the creators have utmost influence over these individuals and. The people that designed these institutions amassed large amounts of wealth during the industrial revolution. People like J.P. Morgan and Rockefeller were seeking to design an educational system that stopped individuals from climbing into the ranks of the elite and as a result, the system that many would think is there to encourage learning and free thought is actually creating mind prisons and streamlining them to work in the steel mills and factories.
Question - What does an education that truly encourages upper mobility and free thinking even look like? Where would we even begin if we were to change the current educational paradigm towards
something like that?
