The article “Fight the Tower: A call to Action for Women of Color in Academia”, by Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde depicts the prevalence of discrimination in the United States, more specifically the discrimination of herself in the field of education. Valverde writes about the harassment she received from her colleagues while trying to obtain tenure; the harassment she faced and continues to face because of her gender, ethnicity, class, and disability. While I am familiar with the discrimination people receive because of the groups they are categorized in, I never realized the emotions and pains that were an effect of it until reading this article. The stress Valverde was so severe that her had miscarried five months in her pregnancy; a life was lost because of her skin color, because she was female, and because she was a pregnant woman in a working environment. Society, instead of looking at what she can do and accomplish as a professional in her field, has punished her because she chose to be a mother. Furthermore, Valverde has ADHD, which is a disorder affecting how she functions. She received no support from her colleagues nor the university and faced further discrimination due to her disability. As a second-generation Filipino-American I have to deal with discrimination due to my ethnicity, both socially and professionally. We need to fight against this injustice in order to receive the equality we deserve, because we should be looked at as an individual instead of as a collective. Valverde fought the system and stood her ground, eventually receiving tenure, striving for equality and continuing to strive until it is achieved. Perseverance will overcome the discrimination we face not only in academia, but everyday life.

In Valverde’s article, she goes into detail about the hierarchy of Asian Americans based on their ethnicity. What makes one ethnic group higher on the list than the other? Is it just because of the status of their country? Or is it a multitude of factors that come into play?
