“Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia,” by professor Valverde highlights the experiences and challenges faced during her time in academia. The reading explains how discrimination, whether it be based on gender, race, or class, hindered her ability to gain tenure at the facility in which she was teaching. Reading about the blatant discrimination that professor Valverde faced was hard enough, but to read that a majority of the discrimination was found within the university was eye opening. One would assume that people within the same organization would be supportive of one another, but the readings and videos from this week have proven that statement to be wrong. The world of education is much more political and dramatic than I would have expected. I did not believe that there would be room for discrimination in education, but the reading has shown that it can be found anywhere. It now seems as if people can be discriminated against for any reason at all, which is why it is so important for us to keep fighting it. Reading about professor Valverde’s journey to tenure was a reminder to keep fighting discrimination. Some may say that our society has overcome discrimination, but in reality it is alive now more than ever.

Question: How can we address the discrimination that is held within a race group?
