Brian Jahja
Section A01
Week 2

Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety – Ethnic Gender and Generational Differences in Asian American College Access and Choices by OiYan Poon and Ajani Byrd was an interesting study on whether or not there was a correlation between the 'tiger mom' parenting style and the success of the children in college and later in life. While this may not directly relate to me, as I am not an Asian American, I was raised with very strict standards and therefore could relate to a lot of the influences that were presented in this article. Growing up, I have always believed that this was an effective way of parenting for Asian children due to our history of oppression, which makes us more resilient and hardworking. This may be a stereotype, but I have always wondered if other cultures, like the westerners' more nourishing parenting style would yield the same result as I believe some children can develop the tendency to work hard through pressure when brought up with high standards and strict parenting, and therefore my question for this week's reading is:

"Would the 'tiger mom' parenting style have the same effect on other cultures or is it only effective with Asians"
