The Korean Wave
Between two major readings we have explored this week, the article “Korean American Youth and Transnational Flows of Popular Culture across the Pacific “by Jung-sun Park led me to have more thinking and understanding regard the issue of popular cultures and Americanization. In this article, Park illustrates the role of (im) migrant youths, specifically Korean American youth, in the transitional follows of popular culture and its ramifications. Meanwhile, the author reflects the hardship which some of the Korean Americans going through about fitting in the America. Before reading this article, I had barely realized the significance of the Korean popular culture onto Korean American youth community. I remembered once I talked to some of my Korean American friends about what they called “K-pop” (Korean popular) culture, they did not have great enthusiasm on it or even though it as silly or meaningless. Thus, reading this article gave me a more overall understanding of how popular Korean culture influences the Korean American communities and even the global culture exchange trend. However, despite its great influence, I believe that Korean wave can have greater impact on American pop culture realm if it can mix up more American elements into itself.
