The
article “Creating Identity, Defining Culture, and Making History from an Art
Exhibit: ‘Unfinished Story: A Tribute to My Mothers,’” makes me think of the
struggle of political representation and dominance in the Asian American
communities, particularly Vietnamese American. I am amazed to see how art could
change the “limits of acceptable cultural production in society”
(Valverde). We recognize changes in
Vietnamese American community as a whole. The political beliefs ranged from
conservative to socialist. There is no longer contradiction between being
anti-communist and visiting relatives in Vietnam. Our community has transformed
into a better place where there is freedom for cultural production to occur and
there is no fear left to voice one’s ideas and opinions. As long as we seek for
truth, history, and experience will our community thrive and survive. Diversity
in society allows for the broken pieces of history to be assembled together and
the fear of being an enemy slowly faded. Thus my question is: how will we be
able to achieve more peace in the community when there are still many problems
left to be solved?
