I do agree to Lee and Hadeed that IPV (intimate partner violence) occurs more frequently within Asian American households than other racial families. I am aware of general Asian cultures, that males play the dominant role in a family and that wives have to obey their husbands. The article lists out other reasons Asian husbands beat their wives other than the cultural norms: acculturative stress, traumatic childhood experiences, etc. Personally, I have never actually experienced or witnessed IPV, and it sounds like stories from the way past. Physically abusing an intimate partner or other people is an unacceptable behavior in South Korea and in the U.S.; therefore, IPV was seen as something awfully bad and unheard of in my community. IPV was pretty irrelevant for me, so I didn't really think about it until I read this article. It was shocking for me to find out that IPV is actually happening within Asian Immigrants families in America. I really think that we have to do something about this and let them know that an act of violence is unacceptable at any circumstances.
