Week 4
In his
article titled Why We Should Fear
University, Inc., Fredrik deBoer expresses his fears that the college
system is becoming more and more like a corporation – a place where one may
feel trapped, easily influenced, and like they are being controlled. He notes
that it is not uncommon for colleges to hire more senior administrators than
professors and that campus political culture, which reflects political debates,
is becoming more highly integral with the attending of the school. My take on
this is that those factors are obstacles for students as the additional amount
of administrators mean more control over us and that the discouragement of
student activism divert our attention away from pursuing what we truly want and
towards what the college wants. It is like we are being put onto a moving track
and are pushed towards signs that point in different directions. In such
institutions, freedom is deteriorating. It is no surprise that colleges are
turning into corporations considering how much of a profit they make from
having students. What could we do to mitigate the involvement of administrators
and obtain the freedom to create a better campus political culture?
