The phrase "Universities are businesses" became very apparent to me the second I entered college. This was something I believed people far older than me griped about over dinner, yet the harsh reality struck almost immediately. As told in "Why We Should Fear University, Inc.", by Frederick deBoer, it is simply stated that Universities are not centers of learning and individuality anymore; instead they are structured as corporations with seeking profit at every corner. The realization of Universities being corporations is a saddening awakening for students; Universities are the places were students go to be independent and truly find themselves as they pave their way to their future. Instead, many students are being taken advantage of by systems within the University to make many off of the students. A perfect example of this is the outrageous cost of every material needed for each class taken by a student: a clicker to answer questions in class, a $200 textbook one will only read half of the chapters from, a $100 mandatory online homework activity for the quarter. Multiply these costs for one class by 4 and you have an average college students quarterly/semesterly expenditures.
Luckily, In Davis, despite all of the aspects of the corporation run University that are apparent here as well, we still have some safe havens to go to that are being taken away from students at other Universities. The arboretum is still well preserved as well as the cow, horse, etc. facilities that make Davis the University it is.
