Due to my identities, I was deeply touched by Week 2’s two reading materials. In the article “Asian Americans and Affirmative Action: From Yellow Peril to Model Minority and Back Again”, the author raised the point that yellow peril and model minority made Asian American confused. As an international student from Asia, I totally understood it. Yellow peril forces Asian Americans to be isolated from native Americans. Others may have misunderstanding on Asian Americans who were labeled as a minority. But, in fact, Asian Americans have better performances in several aspects. Another article “Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender and Generational Differences in Asian American College Access and Choices” is also thought-provoking. For me, I am a first-generation student who received tremendous help from my high school’s college counselor. Honestly, my parents didn’t support me a lot since they were unfamiliar with the college application process. My experience also supports the writer’s points of view. Some people have stereotype that Asian Americans cannot choose their future because they have to take their parents’ suggestions. But it is not true literally. Their parents respect children ideas and allow them to choose their majors and jobs. A question is still remaining that to what extent tiger mom could help Asian American to be successful in college?
