The parenting style of Asians and Asian-Americans is very different from that of Western Societies. Because of the stereotyped success of asian american students, many others parents often wonder what and how they can emulate this success. There certainly is a difference in parenting between these two groups, the stereotypes regarding Asian Americans and academic success are often untrue for the whole population.  Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety- Ethnic, Gender, and Generational Difference explores these differences in greater detail. One thing that was interesting was the reported lack of parent's influence in college and career choices. Typically Asian American parents are stereotyped as having major influences in their children's career and life choices. Part of it is the desire in many Asian countries to be high achieving members of society, and standard measures of success such as income and career choice play a big role in deciding whether an individual is successful. Many western cultures value these, but personal happiness is also another important factor.  Some of the other things that were discovered as part of this research was how important counselors and teachers were in influencing career choices. Because 42% of Asian American students are first generation, as reported in the article, teachers and counselors are their best source to get advice about their options. Because many asian american students are also first generation, they report that their peers also play a big role in decisions they make. It makes sense that those who also share similar experiences as them would have more of an influence. One thing that I would like to still know is are second or third generation asian american children different when compared to first generation students?
