The Stereotype of Asian Submissiveness

Lee and Hadeed’s article concerning Intimate Partner Violence sheds light on the quiet yet prevalent issue of Asian American abuse between intimate partners. Despite the statistics showing that Asians suffer the least abuse, Asian American women actually suffer an immense amount of abuse based on cultural context and traditional beliefs brought from Asia. I think this is definitely tied into traditional Asian culture. Depending on which part of Asia someone comes from, spousal abuse towards women is more or less accepted and often justified. These are taught at a young age. For example, as a child I was told that a woman’s place is at home. Yes, women can work but ultimately they are first and foremost a caregiver and wife. As I’ve grown older I’ve aimed to challenge these values and prove to my elders that women can be much more. It is so rooted into Asian culture that women must be subservient to men and it has even carried over to America. Luckily, as newer generations begin to grow we move away from this ideology but that still leaves modern Asian immigrants. Not only are they not acclimated to American culture but they still hold the beliefs of their homeland.

Question: As younger generations of Asian Americans begin to move away from the ideology of male dominance, how can we introduce more progressive ideals to the recently immigrated Asian households.
