“Intimate
Partner Violence Among Asian Immigrant Communities,” is an article that
explores the prevalence of domestic violence within the Asian immigrant community.
It states that there is little known about the “scope, nature…cultural, and
social factors of IPV among this population.” I agree with this, I think that
domestic violence within the Asian American community is widely unreported
because women are conditioned to believe that male dominance expressed through violence
is simply a part of the norm. As mentioned in the article, in Asian
American homes, men are expected to govern while women are expected to serve.
It is interesting to see how this type of patriarchal structure is
correlated with the acceptance of domestic violence.
The
section on seeking social support stood out to me. The article states that
Asian American women who experience domestic abuse are less likely than women
of other ethnic groups to reach out to services such as women’s shelters, lawyers,
or hospitals for help. This causes me to ask: is the reluctance to seek help a
product of cultural values or a lack of awareness of available resources? Are
there enough culturally sensitive and accessible resources available to Asian American
women who suffer from domestic abuse? If not, what can be done to reach out to
Asian American women in abusive relationships?
