Professor Valverde’s article explains the controversy surrounding UCD artist’s installation called “Connections” and the controversial effects of it within the Vietnamese American community. Chau Huynh’s art as well as its adverse reaction help reflect the diversity and cohesion of the Vietnamese American community. Art is a perfect medium for discussion of these issues as it opens itself up to its own interpretation. As an Asian-American artist myself, I would also hope to spark discussions of such importance to my community. One of the fears that professor Valverde mentions is the fear of one’s history forgotten. I think this is a universal fear among many Asian American communities who have immigrated to America and expect assimilation. For me, acknowledging the lack of interest in my own community’s history is very important to me and would be a good subject for my art. The relevance of a pedicure basin to the Vietnamese American community has sparked a discussion in order to bring the community together. Bridging the gap between those in home countries and those in host countries will help empower these communities and celebrate the diversity of the two.

Question: Through which mediums, can we achieve the greatest discussions?
