Through the Eyes of an Artist
The piece titled, "Creating Identity, Defining Culture, and Making History from an Art Exhibit: 'Unfinished Story: A Tribute to My Mother,'" is beautiful in the sense that it brings history, art, and sociopolitical concepts together to bring light to important topics. The article is about Chau Huynh's art and the messages sent by the work that also leave the public breathless- and not always in a good way. I found this reading to leave a personal affect on me. Being an artist myself, I can see what she was trying to accomplish through her work. She was not only expressing herself and her personal views, but also trying to spark a dialogue amongst us. That dialogue being about anything from stereotypes to foreign affairs. One piece of art, or one exhibition can have a lasting affect on those who view it. It can open the eyes of millions and make people grow to appreciate the messages being sent by it. After looking at Chau Huynh's installation "Connections," I was able to immediately grasp what the piece was saying about the culture in relation to what the people REALLY represent. This being so much more than pedicure spas and a few cords. It not only expresses what these people are limited to now, but also the stereotypes associated with them, and seemingly gives off a meaningful intention to offend someone. Whether it be the ones it is about, or someone else, the offense is intended to create change. If one does not like what they see, change the image before them! I love art and to see a fellow artist creating history in order to change the future is truly inspirational.
Question: How might other artists use their work to change social distresses in their communities in order to bring about a positive influx of empowerment to their culture(s)?
