Situating Asian Americans in the Political Discourse on Affirmative Action

While I was reading this article, there were a few things that caught my eye, especially the quote, "If socioeconomic status is used as an admissions criterion instead of race, UC officials predict that AA enrollment will increase by 15-25% while African Americans will drop 40-50%. Latino enrollment will fall 5-15%, white enrollment will stay the same.” The number differences may be significant, but we also have to take into account the number of Latinos, African Americans, whites, as well as other races that attend the school. If the population of nonwhites was small to begin with, then I don't think the school would be affected as much as if they were to lose 40-50% of their white population.
The demographics of many schools would change, and I ask, how much of their academic and social statistics would change if there was an increase in Asian Americans? As it was said in the article, Asian Americans face resentment for doing "too well" in school, yet wouldn't schools want a higher ranking for academics? I fail to understand why Asian Americans are targeted for excelling in school.
