In Omi and
Takagi’s writing, Asian Americans seem to throw off the entire black and white
binary within society. The fact that there are different shades of “yellow”
within the United States should show that Asian Americans come from various
backgrounds and levels of privilege; not all “yellows” are the same. The “model
minority” is just that, a model, seemingly used and seen as a “perfect”
minority group that can achieve. However, much like models, they ignore the
obvious struggles and imperfections that individuals have because of how “flawless”
the minority group seems. The
black/white binary is a broken system of thought because not everything is
plain as black and white; there are grays and entire rainbows of diversity
outside of the binary.
Question: Why do so many individuals seem to only think within a binary system, when there are always more then two options?
