With more political and social issues that come
about year after year, the higher the demands for censorship of those subjects are. According
to the Atlantic, they talk about “How trigger warnings are hurting mental
health on campus.” Students are demanding protection from words and ideas that offend
them and the Atlantic discusses why censorship will be disastrous for education
and the mental health of these students. I somewhat agree with this statement. These
students want to take out curriculum that seem upsetting and unpleasant to them—such
as literature depicting racial violence, misogyny and abuse. Is the educational system supposed to be doing their job as protectors for these students? Coddling students
to not experience any discomfort in school is kind of impossible and even if it
is, it would not prepare them for any distress that comes after graduating.
Is protecting
them from these topics more helpful or hurtful? Also, after four or more years of
college, what will they have really learned?
