In the joint policy report on Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and higher education diversity, authors write about the effects of Proposition 209, how it is negatively effecting higher education, and how affirmative action actually helps the college and professional school environment, as well as our society. Proposition 209, which banned affirmative action, was reported to increase AAPI admission into colleges, however the opposite is true according to data stated in the report about AAPI admission percentages being lower than that of underrepresented minorities. AAPI admissions were increased with affirmative action, and the article shows that these admissions not only benefit the AAPI students, but also the school community, including all races. With higher education diversity there is a better understanding of different races within the population and a larger knowledge of the cultures of different people of different race. Thus, I find that there is only benefits to affirmative action, and with an increase in AAPI admission to at least the rate that other underrepresented minorities are at, there can only be positive results, since AAPI's even have strong interests in improving higher education to meet the needs of our California economy. All in all, what do we all really have to lose with affirmative action?
