The
USA Patriot Act was passed after the attacks on September 11 to grant federal
officials more access to intercept communications and enhance surveillance
procedures, in order to increase national security. This included the ability
to tap into phone conversations, trace e-mails, and invest bank accounts, and
anything else that may warrant suspicious foreign activity. While supporters of
the Patriot Act believe that all of this is necessary to combat terrorism,
others believe that these provisions are too extreme and invade privacy. The
Patriot Act, in some cases, gives the government more power that potentially
takes away the protection and freedom of habeas corpus, due process, and violates
the first and fourth amendment.
Q: How might citizens minimize risk from the Patriot Act?
