Week 1
I’m very
impressed by Professor Valverde’s paper, “The
Time to Fight is Now: Asian American Women, Academia’s Socially Engineered “Privileged
Oppressed,” Go Rogue. Somehow, I can feel the anger and helplessness when I
came to those parts of Asian Americans facing injustice in academia, even
though I cannot be identified as an Asian American student rigorously but an international
Asian student.
The paper
illustrated the main issue of Asian Americans who fell in the stereotype of
being generally more outstanding than the other groups, but too submissive to
speak up for the inequality they faced in academia. The term “privileged
oppressed” came out all the time in the paper and it perfectly defines the
group of Asian Americans. They are privileged because they are intelligent and
hardworking, and they are so successful in the field of academia. They are
oppressed because they always keep silent and seldom defend themselves when
facing those unfair. Thus, they easily become the oppressed targets for some companies
(Valverde, 2017). When it
comes to me, I find myself fall into the same stereotype in situations when I become
quiet and refuse to argue for my own advantage. After reading the paper, I
believe I have to do some changes for Asians. Meanwhile, I hope all Asian
Americans could be woke and be passionate to fight for the good they deserve, just like the picture
below of those protesting against Asia.
