week 1 - Zaige Wang - A04

After reading Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia by professor Valverde, I was shocked by how Asian American, especially Asian American women are treated unevenly and what happened in an American university. I know there have been such racial and sexual problems, but I haven't realized how critical they are until I read the stories in this article. I read about both the very low percentage of highly educated Asian American women who get tenured positions in university and how prof. Valverde was bullied as a professor in University of California, Berkeley. I have been believing that UC berkeley should be a place of equality and focus on academic, as the most famous public University in the world. However, there are still politics and "tribes" in the working environment, and even racism inside the Asian American community. I am glad that prof. Valverde would not accept such environment and chose to fight for herself. As an international student, I didn't know much of the situation of Asian American in workplace, and this article has inspired me a lot.

Question: Why could this happen in UC Berkeley not very long ago?
