Theme: Your Education at UC Davis and the Asian American Experience
In the reading article "Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia, written by Professor Dr. Valverde, significant racial and discriminatory issues that are often times hidden in ideal visions of university workplaces are brought to light. While reading Dr. Valverde's hardship and terrible loss, I felt a connection to her as a fellow Vietnamese Asian-American living in the United States. Although we are fortunate to be living in a more liberal state, many universities and sanctuaries of higher education that promote diversity often times still hide an ugly side of racial discrimination in the work force. Many people, especially students and working adults who are not working in education, mistakenly believe that higher-education universities and establishments do not harbor racial discrimination as they are envision as a place filled with diversity and acceptance.
In Dr. Valverde's case, it was not only an issue of racial discrimination, but also an issue of gender inequality. It is important to understand that women of color deal with racial discrimination and inequality in every field; although we are primed to think that universities and higher-education facilities enforce diversity policies into their workplace, we must know that the actual practicing of these policies is often times different from ideal visions and written laws/policies.
Question: As Asian-Americans as a whole, what can we do in order to create awareness for racial discrimination in such education facilities that claim to have a growing diversity and acceptance?
