Week 3

Alex Truong
Section 2

In Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender and Generational Differences in Asian American College Access and Choices by OiYan Poon and Ajani Byrd it touches upon the many influences that Asian Americans have within their lives regarding higher education. This reading conducts a research in which ways influences on the choices of these high school students and how it conforms to the idea of them being the "model minority". Throughout the research they interview students to get an idea of who or what impacted them on their decisions for higher education.

I can see how this reading can resonate to many people of Asian American cultures. For instance, I really agree with some of the students when they say that their parents have a great impact on their decisions to pursue higher education. Personally, I do feel obligated to go to college and provide for them in the future because they have already done so much for me. My mom was not a tiger mom and was not strict on me but whenever it came down to it she always made sure I had my schooling straight and figured out.

The model minority can be a good and a bad thing. Yes, the model minority describes Asian Americans as "good" people but labeling an entire group of people is unacceptable. People often wonder why Asian Americans excel and are similar in their dedication to succeed. In my opinion, this is because a majority of Asian Americans come from some sort of similar backgrounds of being displaced from their homelands in search of a better future. This however, does not give people the authority to group Asians as being all the same.
