Week 3: "Tiger mom.."

A02

Out of the two readings, i enjoyed the article "Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, gender and generational differences in Asian American college access and choices" because it was very relatable to me and my experiences. This article emphasizes the point that some Asian-American students are heavily influenced by parents in their college choices. I look back at some of my motivations to come to a University like this; and i realize how much of an impact my parents when I chose my college. My parents did not really inform me of many colleges, except the fact that UC's were highly respectable. This article really puts a new perspective on Asian-Americans and their choices to a higher education. I think for a lot of Asian-Americans, they tend to think that they made their own choices, when in reality their parents have constantly made them believe in a certain idea. Financial issues, distance from home, and reputation of school are all things that some Asian-Americans think about when deciding to go to college. However, even in this article, where some claim that these factors are all things they considered for themselves; how can we know how much of an impact their parents have had on them? I think that constant brainwashing of parents make it almost impossible for kids, like myself(asian-americans), to have a clear choice in their own needs. Most of their needs are focused on what their parents want, or what is the best thing to do for their parents status. This type of thinking can have detrimental effects on kids because it makes them too dependent on their parents to choose everything in their life for them. Reading this article really got me to thinking that most of my career/life choices are based off of what my parents think is best and not what i truly want. I don't think that it is wrong for parents to influence kids in their choices, but i think that sometimes, people should do what they want to do, and what they think is the best for them.

Question: how much of an impact do parents have on kids when choosing colleges? Why do 1.5 generation and first generations differ when thinking about colleges? Who is right and who is wrong?
