Week 3

In the article Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender and Generational Differences in Asian American Access and Choices, Authors Oiyan Poon and Ajani Byrd argue that the the influence of 'Tigers Moms' have a notable impact upon both the life choices of their children as well as the demographic of colleges in which they choose.

In terms of the life choices of their children, Tiger moms generally have a set idea of what their child will become as they grow older. This includes certain accomplishments that the child must obtain as well as specific hobbies they have to pursue. It's very sad to think about, considering if the child deters from the track that the mother had in mind, they will be shut down and forced to get back on.

As for demographics in colleges, I believe these are fairly affected by the tiger mom's expectations on their children. What I mean by this is the fact that their expectations cause their children to only reach for higher-end colleges is the main reason why there are so many of these children are found in these colleges. The fact that most tiger moms are asian and that most higher-end colleges have an asian majority have a clear correlation.

In my personal life, I was unaware that there was such a concept as 'tiger mom'. My mother would always encourage me to pursue what I wanted to be and to follow whatever my heart desired. Although she did give me free reign of what I wanted, she did look down upon lower-end occupations that I looked into as a career. However, this is only because she saw the potential in me that I hadn't seen and didn't want that to go to waste. In reality, I believe every mom has a 'tiger mom' in them, just varying degrees of it.

This article reminded me of a picture I found in my Health class. I found it comical in a way that this is what my mom desires of me but it's not only what she wants, but it's what I want as well.
