Crosscultural interaction USA and India Ribhu Singh week 7
Reading this week's piece on the role of Korean-American has made me cognizant of the similarities between the Indian American community and it's role in facilitating cultural exchange between the east and west. India, with it's status as possessing the largest film industry in the world has long been a medium for examining cross cultural exchange and the unique syncretic culture that has resulted due to Bollywood's emphasis on the Non Resident Indian community. I can relate to the vignettes in the article relating to Korean American adults watching drama's with their children first hand, and can attest to the contextualization that a foreign portrayal of one's adopted culture that a televised drama can provide. I am curious as to how cross cultural mixing can be co-opted by Western media in an equitable way? I can see 1st hand like the Korean Americans how the alienation present by being a part of the 1.5 generation can deter socio-economic success, and am hopeful that increased cultural dialogue can rectify this phenomenon. As this topic directly pertains to our groups social awareness campaign I hope to aid in the creation of this dialogue.
