"How Higher Education Diversity Benefits Our
Communities" addresses misconceptions about affirmative action and its
effects on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The report explains how even
though many people consider AAPI's to be on the "white" side of the
black-white racial spectrum, statistics show that the group still lacks a lot
of representation in higher education. "Situating Asian Americans in the
Political Discourse on Affirmative Action" takes a look at both right and
left political views on affirmative action. Both articles have prompted me to
reflect on Asian Americans' awkward position in the struggle to determine which
races are "black" and which are "white". Although we face
discrimination and racism from our oppressors just like other people of color
do, the model minority has convinced many that we are more "white"
than others. Both articles demonstrate how Asian Americans and the model
minority stereotype have been used to attack affirmative action even though we
ultimately still benefit from it. Furthermore, the fight over affirmative
action legislation pulls AAPI's further into the black-white paradigm even
though we fall into neither side of the spectrum.
Question: How can affirmative action be improved to minimize
misconceptions about AAPI's and the model minority stereotype?
