The Surprising Facts About Education Among Asians

Response to the API Census

As I was reading the census scrolling down reading interesting facts about Asian Americans, one section really stood out to me. The section was regarding to education and focusing on what was the percentage of single-race Asian 25 and older who held a bachelor degree or higher. This number of 50% shocked me because growing up in a Chinese household my parents emphasized how important education is and going to college was the only way that I will ever find a job in the future. I am not going to lie, that alone scared the crap out of me and that was the main thing I focused on in high school. Doing my best to get into a good university and then coming out with a job and paying my dues. That is at least what I thought was going on through every student’s mind. According to this only 50% of Asian students held a degree of some sort and I am just shocked. Thinking back on this I guess I do understand why some students choose not to go to school. Some might have family obligations to handle that hinder them from going to college. Some might think it is a waste of time and rather start working as soon as possible. Although there are a handful of people who became very successful without a college degree, that should not be a good enough reason for current high school students to follow. I personally feel that college should be a mandatory thing. I had a great time here, learned a lot, and met a lot of people. There are some experiences you cannot replicate and to me going to college is one of them.

Question: Would you push your children to go to college or would you give them the option to decide for themselves?
