After reading the articles for this week, it became clear that the idea of having rules and policies to prevent racism are simply not enough. In fact, no matter how much regulation there is, it will never be enough. Instead, what we need is transparency in the world. The stories in the articles showed that racism is mostly prevalent in areas where information is kept from the public eye. Professor Valverde's fight for tenure is such an example. The students getting involved seemed to be a significant factor in her success in the tenure battle, and this happened only after the problems in the system were exposed to the general public. As long as people are able to hide behind screens, this kind of culture will continue to persist. This is even true when extended to talking about politics. The world will be a better place when there is transparency and the motives of people can be critiqued.
Richard Aoki, a member of the Black Panthers. He was an example of people who try to fix the problems who exist within the culture.
What can we do to increase the transparency within our culture?
