Reading Reflection #1
"Nothing is More Important Than Thinking Dialetically"
Group of students of all ethnicity in Chicago committed to empowering a diverse Asian American community through organization. |
In this article, author Grace Lee Boggs informs the readers about the importance of thinking "dialectically" in order to start a movement not similar to ones we have already encountered. By doing this, we will allow for communities to unite together and explore the relationships we share with others and with the world. Because many are unaware of the diversity of ethnicity and cultures, we are unable to think critically through an exchange of logical arguments and truly see how this might affect not only the community as a whole, but the individual as well. Boggs essentially wants us to come together, learn from each other and understand each other not to take control of the power that already exists, but instead to establish a new power of the community. Boggs makes it clear that in order to see this change, we should not look to history and repeat those actions because what worked in the past might not work for the present since times are clearly changing. I feel that the questions she poses towards the end of the article serve as a great way to really get the reader thinking about how they can contribute to the start of this movement. The questions are challenging, highlighting the obstacles that the community will face when initiating this movement. However, I think once the community is willing to tackle those questions and make those risks, then we will see change for the better.
Question: Do you think this movement will be coming any time soon? If so, how can we successfully bring the community together and let them know about the issues we face?
