Reflection #1
Reaction to "UC Davis Facts:
When I saw that a majority of undergraduates were Asian, it didn't really surprise me since the high school I came from, Arcadia High School, had almost a 70% Asian population. I've grown up around Chinese cultures for all my life since the city I lived in had big Chinese communities. When I came to Davis, I noticed that there were more White/ Caucasians in the city which was an interesting change.
The reason why people think Asians are smarter isn't that we are particularly born with better brains equipped for studying. It's due to the fact that our culture emphasizes an importance on studies and knowledge. If I remember correctly, in ancient China, one of the requirements to be a government official was to pass the Imperial Examination. So this stereotype that we are all good at academics, music, and other things are putting pressure and making them ashamed that they don't fall within the stereotype. It's kind of a ego booster when you know that people think you are really smart and you can flaunt it, but if you don't live up to the expectations, it's really soul-crushing.
Question: Is it beneficial to be assumed smart at the get-go, or is it better to be assumed average?
