I admire the fact that Caroline Kieu-Linh Valverde opens up "Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia" with such a personal story. It definitely engaged me as a student to look deeper into the obstacles and oppression that women of color face. I can definitely relate with Professor Valverde as a mixed Vietnamese American. Growing up in a predominately Vietnamese and Hispanic neighborhood, I was always deemed different compared to others due to being mixed race. I was not like the rest and I grew up extremely confused until my mid-teen years. Sometimes I would get bullied by the rest of the kids for looking Hispanic, although I am Vietnamese mixed White. Other times I would get compliments for looking unique (I hope that is considered a compliment) and "beautiful" for a "Vietnamese" only because people in my culture adore a more "westernize" appearance. I agree that these topics should be openly discussed because it is a problem that is often overlooked. After reading this article, it really made me question more about my background and the struggles she faced as an intra-racial women. Because in my culture, it is really hard to be personal and open about our elder's struggle. What kind of call to action can we implement to help with topics dealing with intra-racial?
