Women of Color in Academia?
Before
reading, “Women of Color in Academia Manifesto” and “Fight the tower: A Call to
Action for Women of Color in Academia,” I was unaware that discrimination among
women of color in academia still exists. I knew that discrimination within the
work force existed, however I wouldn’t think that it would exist within highly
educated systems, such as universities. It angers me that women of color are
still considered incompetent because of their color, race, gender, and other
presumptions associated to them. As I was reading these articles, I was reminded
of the professors I’ve had within the last three years and found that the
majority of professors I’ve had were males. It was interesting because
Professor Valverde is the first female Asian American professor I’ve had. This
really opened my eyes and made me realized how we must unite together to stand
against the institutional attacks, help each other to unite and raise our
voices.
The question is
how long would it take us, women of color, to obtain the same equality as others in
academia?
